I feel like I’m always searching for chicken dinner recipes especially for boneless, skinless chicken because I always keep it in my freezer. There’s so much you can make with chicken. Right?
What I love about this recipe is how it has good flavor with so few ingredients. The chicken is tender and juicy and the cream sauce can be as fatty or not as you like by using the substitutions I give you below. You can always add more garlic or butter too. In short, this is a customizable main dish chicken dinner. Just look at those creamy mushrooms and chicken!
This recipe makes enough for six servings. Of course that always depends on how big you like your servings but, I’d say you’ll get at least 4 big servings from this recipe. We had enough for leftovers the next night and I made Arborio rice in my Instant Pot to go with it.

It’s nice to know what you can substitute in recipes right off the bat. I am always substituting ingredients or omitting them based on what I have on hand. It always works but, if you’re a beginner cook, you’ll be more nervous to do this and I get it.
So, I’ll just tell you.
Additions and Substitutions:
- Use heavy cream instead of half and half.
- Use whole milk instead of half and half.
- Use canned mushrooms instead of fresh.
- Add fresh parsley.
- Add fresh or dried Thyme.
You may be wondering why I used garlic powder instead of fresh garlic. I like to sprinkle my chicken with garlic so that it’s almost fully covered. You can certainly add minced garlic to the cream sauce but, I also am trying to make this dinner as simple as possible with fewer things to wash.
Use a paper plate to dredge the chicken in flour and toss it if you don’t have a dishwasher. Thankfully, I do!
This is a good beginner cook recipe because it has few ingredients and comes together quickly.
Next time you’re at the grocery store, pick up some sliced mushrooms and make this yummy Skillet Creamy Garlic Mushroom Chicken for dinner. It makes a great main dish for corn, mashed potatoes, rice or green veggies.
