4th of July Fruit Salad Recipe
As America prepares to celebrate Independence Day, we plan summer picnics, fireworks, and of course, delicious, patriotic food- like a Patriotic Layer Cake with red, white and blue layers!
Colorful fruit is visually appealing and refreshing on a hot summer day, so don’t look further than this red, white, and blue fruit salad. This recipe is a bit similar to my Easy Italian Fruit Salad (Macedonia) because I use fresh lemon juice in it too.
Obviously, this fruit salad is perfect for other patriotic holidays like Memorial Day weekend, Flag Day and Labor Day too.
This vibrant dish not only pays homage to the colors of the American flag but also showcases the bountiful flavors of summer’s best, juicy fruits. This easy-to-make patriotic fruit salad recipe will be the star of your July 4th picnic.

- strawberries
- raspberries
- watermelon
- red grapes
- white peaches
- blueberries
- blackberries
- lemon juice or lime juice
- mint leaves (optional)
Watermelon is a staple at summer barbecues so it’s a must for a patriotic fruit salad recipe. It’s RED, ripe and delicious. Plus, it adds juices that pair well with the fresh berries. Also, add a touch of lemon juice to give this fruit salad a nice citrus touch.
I’ve added a few sprinkles of chopped fresh mint to this recipe but, feel free to omit if you wish.

Star Cookie Cutters
Use a small star-shaped cookie cutter to cut the watermelon slices or make white stars with white fruit which is what I did. I used white peaches to make the stars for this recipe.
This adds a nice patriotic touch if you’ve got a little extra time. Alternatively, you can make stars out of the watermelon much easier.
How to Make White Stars
As I’ve mentioned above, you can use white melon, white peaches, anjou pears to make white stars for your patriotic fruit salad.
For white peaches or anjou pears: Stand them up straight and cut them on the side to make long slices. It may be easier to cut the peach in half and remove the pit, so you don’t cut into it. Use a small star cookie cutter for this.

Summary Instructions
*The printable, full recipe is in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- Rinse all fruits and mint thoroughly. Remove any stems from strawberries or seeds from watermelon as necessary.
- Cut the watermelon into uniform bite-sized pieces. It will look more visually appealing than different sizes. Cut strawberries into slices.
- Add to large Bowl: watermelon pieces, red grapes, blueberries, black raspberries (reserve some blackberries to place on top), and strawberries.
- Then, chop the mint and add to the bowl.
- Next, squeeze two tablespoons of fresh lemon juice and add it to the bowl.
- Then, using a big spoon, stir it. Garnish it with extra mint leaves and put remaining black berries on top.
Red, White and Blue Layering
Alternatively, you can layer the red, white and blue fruits to create a striking display of colors reminiscent of the American flag.
In a big clear glass or plastic bowl, begin by layering the red fruits at the bottom of a large serving bowl or platter, followed by the white fruits, and finally, the blue fruits on top.
This may be a good option if you don’t have time to cut out white stars. Plus, if you’re having trouble finding white fruit, honeydew melon will work with a layered salad because it won’t be as obvious that it’s greenish when it’s in the bowl.
Substitutions and Additions
- Add chopped fresh basil instead of mint.
- If lemon isn’t your thing, you can use 2 tablespoons of fresh lime juice or 1/4 cup of pineapple juice or orange juice.
- Sprinkle toasted coconut flakes over the top of the fruit salad for added flavor and texture.
-
Add 1-2 tablespoons of honey or agave syrup to the lemon or lime juice to make a citrus dressing for an added burst of flavor.
Presentation
Serve the Red, White, and Blue Fruit Salad in a decorative patriotic large bowl on ice to keep it from spoiling at summer picnics. Cover it with collapsible mesh to keep the bugs off it.
Storage
Store leftover fruit salad in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to five days for maximum freshness.
