When I saw how much people liked my Monster Mash Brownies, I just had to make the cookie version. I’m impressed with how they turned out and am so excited to share them with you. I enjoy making Halloween recipes along with stringing spider webs on my bushes and hanging skeletons.
This recipe is different than the Monster Mash Brownies for two reasons. One they’re cookies and not brownies and two, they’re not made with candy melts. Both recipes are fun to make and yummy to eat.
“These cooks are so delicious!” says my 7 year old. I love seeing the excitement in my boys faces when I tell them mommy is making monster cookies and you can help decorate them.

Monster Mash Chocolate Cookies
You could use store bought refrigerated cookie dough to make this recipe and I won’t judge but, if you have time to make this recipe from scratch, I very much suggest it. It’s a recipe I got from my Hershey’s cookbook that a dear friend gave me years ago.
You can find some of the decorating ingredients in the baking aisle of the grocery store and most definitely at craft stores.
Cookie Decorating Ingredients
You don’t have to “orange” sprinkles. You could use green sprinkles or orange sugar crystals instead of green. It doesn’t matter but, you do want to use the colors- orange, green and purple. But, of course, you don’t HAVE to. They’re your cookies and you can do what makes you smile!

- orange sprinkles (Amazon affiliate link)
- green sugar crystals (Amazon affiliate link)
- purple nonpareils (Amazon affiliate link)
You can use the green sugar crystals for Christmas or St. Patrick’s Day desserts so they won’t go to waste. You’ll likely use them for other baking throughout the year. You can also use them for the rim of cocktails and mocktails.

Cookie Decorating TIPS:
- when you add the sprinkles, sugar crystals and nonpareils, to the cookies add each to a different section of the cookie. For example, put the purple nonpareils in 1/3 section, the orange sprinkles in another 1/3 section and the green sugar crystals in the remaining 1/3 section. Then add the candy eyes wherever you like.
- For dimension, put a jumbo candy eye next to a smaller candy eye.
- Make one-eyed monsters or 3 or more eyed-monsters.
Substitutions
- Use purple or green sprinkles instead of orange
- Use orange or green nonpareils instead of purple
- Use orange or purple sugar crystals instead of green
If you leave the cookies in the oven a little longer than 10 minutes, the eyes will melt and that looks pretty cool for monster eyes.
How cute are these cookies? I just LOVE them! They taste as good as they look too.
It’s so much fun baking with my kids. I will one day treasure the memories I’ve made with while they were little.
