Italian Sausage Peppers and Onions Sandwiches are incredibly delicious and easy-to-make for game day, parties, dinner or lunch. Make this Italian-American classic for your family.
You can’t go to an Italian festival in Philly (I’m from the Philly area) or New York and not smell the aroma of sausage, peppers and onions cooking on a grill. This sandwich is one of the most popular sandwiches at these festivals, next to meatballs sandwiches, and for good reason.
Your kitchen will have this great-smelling aroma when you make this recipe and your family will ask “What’s cooking?”
Make the casserole version of this recipe made with potatoes, which is on our dinner rotation because we love it so much.

The sausage picks up the flavors of the peppers and onions along with the olive oil and it becomes a wonderful flavor combination. The juices that form are amazingly flavorful. They’re so, so good!

Italian Sausage Peppers and Onions Sandwiches
Being the daughter of two Italian immigrants, I know a thing or two about Italian cooking. So, your in good hands here!
As I said above, these sandwiches are easy-to-make. Just prep the veggies- green bell peppers, red bell peppers, and onions and put them in a large frying pan.
Then place the sausages, olive oil, Italian seasoning and garlic in the pan. Stir, cover, and cook for about 25 minutes on medium-high heat or until the sausage is no longer pink inside.
I like to use both red and green bell peppers because the red peppers are sweet and add a very nice flavor that the green peppers alone can not.
Also, you can use sweet or mild Italian sausage or hot Italian sausage for this recipe. If you don’t have hot sausage but, you want to make it a little spicy, add some red pepper flakes!
It will look and be so delicious when it’s done!
Add some marinara sauce, if you’d like. That would make it taste great too!
Of course you can add provolone or mozzarella cheese and put it in the oven to toast the bread and melt the cheese too if you want to make it over-the-top awesome! Doesn’t that sound amazing?
I know your family is going to LOVE these juicy sandwiches! This recipe can be made in bulk and made ahead for parties. They’re great sandwiches to add to your list of game day recipes.
I make a similar recipe to this that is a casserole: Italian Sausage Peppers, Onions and Potatoes, which is another great family dinner to put on your dinner rotation.
