Watermelon Margarita without Fresh Watermelon

What’s great about this recipe is that you don’t need to have fresh watermelon to make it. Although fresh watermelon adds a level of freshness to the drink, it’s not sweet enough to sweeten the drink enough. That’s where the watermelon syrup comes in to save the day.

Of course, if you have watermelon handy and want to add some fresh juice to it, that will make it even better. But, if you’re anything like me, a trip to the grocery store just for one ingredient is not convenient and Amazon can drop the simple syrup off at your doorstep before you get dressed to go to the store.

Ingredients

*The full printable recipe is in the recipe card below where you can increase the number of servings.

  • good quality tequila (Use your favorite white tequila) I used Cabo Wabo, but you can use Reposado tequila .
  • Cointreau orange liqueur (I don’t suggest Triple Sec for this drink)
  • fresh limes (for juice and garnish)
  • watermelon syrup
  • ice cubes
  • course salt for rim
  • small seedless watermelon slice (optional for garnish)

Instructions

  1. First, squeeze the lime juice from one lime. You’ll need about a 1/4 cup of fresh lime juice. If there isn’t enough in one lime then squeeze the remainder needed from a second lime.
  2. Next, use the lime half to juice the rim of the margarita glass to make the salted rim. Put the rim of the glass onto a small plate with a shallow layer of course salt. Dip the rim of the glass in the salt.
  3. Then, fill a cocktail shaker with ice and put the lime juice, tequila, Cointreau and watermelon syrup in a cocktail shaker. Put the lid on tightly and shake it for about 30 seconds. I suggest trying a sip to see if you like the sweetness of it. If you’d like a sweeter drink, add a little more of the watermelon syrup.
  4. Next, pour the margarita mixture in the glass. Garnish the rim of your glass with watermelon slice and/or lime slice.
  5. Alternatively, make this a frozen watermelon margarita by putting all of the ingredients (except the garnish and salt of course) into a high-speed blender and blend on high until smooth.
  6. Skinny margarita: Make this a skinny drink by adding less of the watermelon syrup. Start with a teaspoon and adjust to your sweetness level. Remember, the Cointreau adds sweetness.

Additions and Substitutions

  1. Use watermelon agave if you can find it and don’t want to use watermelon syrup.
  2. I don’t suggest using Triple Sec instead of Cointreau but, if that’s what you have on hand, it’ll still work.
  3. Although you can substitute watermelon juice for the watermelon syrup, I don’t suggest it because it will not give enough watermelon flavor.
  4. I suggest using fresh lime juice however, if you only have the bottled lime juice available, you can use it.
  5. Make it a Spicy Watermelon Margarita: Add jalapeno slices to the shaker to make this drink spicy.

Food Pairings

This is the perfect refreshing drink and just may become your drink of choice to make on a hot and humid summer day. It’s great for a dinner party because you can make a pitcher ahead of time and serve it alongside your delicious Mexican dinner. Get the ingredients you need to make this perfect margarita this summer! Cheers!

Total: 5 minutes
This easy watermelon margarita recipe is super easy to make with just a few ingredients: fresh lime juice, white tequila, Cointreau, watermelon syrup and salt for the salt rim! Pitcher recipe included.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz tequila (I used white tequila Cabo Wabo)
  • 1 oz Cointreau orange liqueur
  • 2 oz fresh lime juice (about the juice of one lime)
  • 1 oz watermelon syrup (or two tablespoons)
  • 1 cup ice cubes
  • 1 tbsp course salt for rim
  • 1 slice lime (optional)
  • 1 slice watermelon for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  • First, put the course salt on a shallow plate so you can dip the margarita glass into it to make the salt rim.
  • Then, cut the lime in half and cut off a thin slice for garnish. Juice the remaining lime. Measure out 2 oz of fresh lime juice and put it in a cocktail shaker filled with ice cubes. If it's a little under 2 oz, it's o.k.
  • Then, use the inside of the lime to put the juice on the rim of the margarita glass and immediately dip the rim of the glass into the salt to make the salt rim.
  • Next, put the tequila, Cointreau and watermelon syrup into the cocktail shaker (which already has the lime juice and ice cubes in it) and shake it vigorously for about 30 seconds.
  • Then, pour the contents of the cocktail shaker into the margarita glass and garnish with a lime slice and/or small slice of watermelon.
