This tomato tart recipe is a tasty appetizer for a dinner party when you want something you don’t have to keep hot but is still filling. Eat the leftovers for a light lunch the next day.
It’s a great way to use up garden tomatoes.
What kind of tomatoes to use
I like to use round, ripe tomatoes for this dish. Summer garden tomatoes are best but, you can certainly make this dish any time of year. I’ve made this recipe with plum tomatoes and heirloom tomatoes because that’s what I had on hand and they worked out well too.
What kind of puff pastry to use
You can use store-bought puff pastry for this recipe. I used one 8 oz puff pastry sheet (there are two sheets in a 17 oz box) to make this dish but, you can use the puff pastry shells. One 10 oz box of puff pastry shells is enough to make this recipe.

Ingredients
- sheet puff pastry
- juicy tomatoes
- egg (for egg wash)
- fresh basil
- balsamic glaze
- extra virgin olive oil
- black pepper
Feta Cheese Mixture
- feta cheese
- heavy cream
- cream cheese
- onion powder
- garlic powder
Summary Instructions
First, preheat oven to 400F. Whisk egg in a small bowl for egg wash.
Meanwhile, make the feta cheese mixture: Add feta cheese, heavy cream, cream cheese, onion powder and garlic powder to food processor and mix for 4-5 minutes however, every minute, stop the mixing, open and scrape the sides with a rubber spatula. Refrigerate until ready to use.
Then, place puff pastry sheet on a small baking sheet and coat with whisked egg (egg wash).

Next, bake the puff pastry brushed with egg wash at 400F for 20 minutes. It will turn golden brown and puff up very high but, not need to worry. Let it cool about 10 minutes. The egg wash makes it look golden brown and very appetizing!

Meanwhile, cut the tomatoes into 1/4 inch round slices and make basil ribbons with the basil (stack and roll the basil and cut it width wise.)
Then, after the puff pastry has cooled, flatten it with your hands. Spread the feta cheese mixture evenly on top.

Nexct, arrange the sliced tomatoes in a single layer.

Then, add the basil ribbons, sprinkle with black pepper and drizzle with a little olive oil followed by balsamic glaze. Serve immediately. It can be covered and refrigerated until ready to serve.

NOTE: I don’t add salt to this recipe because the feta cheese is already salty.
This puff pastry tomato tart is a tasty appetizer or side dish for brunch. Your family and friends will be amazed at the fresh flavors of this tomato tart.
Because of the red, white and green colors, it’s perfect for Christmas parties!
