What does “macchiato” mean?
Macchiato means “stained.” In reference to a macchiato coffee, which is coffee and frothed milk, it would mean it has a “stain” of coffee, therefore not as much coffee as compared to a latte.
Because my parents were Italian immigrants, I was introduced to espresso long before Starbucks came along. Because I’m all Italian, I have delicious and authentic Italian recipes so, stay a while after you read about this recipe. There’s a lot more to see!
Once in a while, I like to add a little booze, like Baileys Irish Cream, to my coffee for flavoring. Do check out my easy and delicious coffee cocktails, like my Cappuccino with Baileys and Amaretto.

A good Peppermint Mocha can’t be understated. Coffee, chocolate and peppermint go so well together. You’re going to love this peppermint mocha macchiato recipe!
What is the difference between a latte and a macchiato?
Although the drinks are similar, a macchiato has a higher proportion of espresso than a latte. Therefore, a macchiato has more coffee flavor (1:1 ratio) than a latte which tastes more milky because it has a higher proportion of milk to coffee. I prefer a stronger coffee presence and will always pick a cappuccino or macchiato over a latte.
Christmas Coffee Drinks
I like to try to recreate holiday drinks from coffee shops, especially Starbucks holiday drinks. That way I have a nice Christmas coffee recipe ready for Christmas morning to drink as we look at what St. Nick brought us.
It is my favorite time of the year! The closest Starbucks is 10 minutes from me and I can make one in much less time and for a lot cheaper!

Peppermint Mocha
What’s great about making a Peppermint Mocha drink yourself is that YOU CAN CONTROL THE SUGAR and the quality of ingredients.
That’s so important to the taste of the drink and its level of deliciousness!

Christmas Coffee Drinks Equipment
You will need a milk frother to make this macchiato. As you know, some coffee machines come with one built in.
We love our fully automatic DeLonghi espresso machine and it makes a fabulous Christmas gift! If you go to Starbucks or coffee shops enough, it’s worth it to buy the machine and make your favorite drinks at home whenever you feel like it!
Obviously, if that isn’t in your budget this year, you can make espresso with a Moka pot on your stovetop for less than $20!
It makes every drink you can buy from Starbucks and the coffee drinks taste about the same and if I use their coffee beans, it tastes even more like theirs.

Can I make this into a Christmas coffee cocktail?
Make this an adult beverage by adding liqueur. Here are some suggestions:
- Baileys Irish Cream (or make my delicious homemade Peppermint Baileys to add to it)
- Kahlua- Add a tablespoon or so.
- Godiva- Substitute it for the chocolate syrup in this recipe.
- Add peppermint schnapps instead of peppermint syrup and adjust sugar as needed.
Feel free to add sugar if you feel it needs it.
