What Kind of Apples to Use
It’s best to use baking apples, which I’ve listed below. However, I find using tart apples, such as Granny Smith apples, work best in apple desserts. Pick what baking apples are most appealing to you.
- Granny Smith-tart and sweet, hold their shape
- Honeycrisp- sweet/tart, hold their shape
- Braeburn-spicy sweet flavor, maintain their texture
- Pink Lady-sweet/tart flavor, maintain their texture
- other apples- Renette apples, Jonagold, Fuji, Cortland apples
PRO TIP: Be sure to slice the apples as thinly as you can. 1/16th of an inch is perfect because if you slice them too thick, it’ll take longer to bake the pie and then the crust will get too brown. Also, you risk some apple slices being too hard while others are not.
