This oven-baked Italian sausage is a tasty and super easy Italian main dish that goes great with many side dishes for a quick and easy weeknight dinner.

Italian sausage is one of those easy recipes that is my “go to” main dish when I don’t have time or don’t have the ingredients much else. Plus, it defrosts quickly because it’s boneless.
Italian sausage is perhaps the EASIEST Italian main dish there is. It’s so tasty and easy that anyone can make it regardless of your cooking level experience. Therefore, it’s great for beginner cooks.
You can make this recipe as is, which is simply oven-baked Italian pork sausage or add some other ingredients to make it more of an Italian sausage bake. Nonetheless, it’s a fantastic sheet pan dinner that’s a flavorful meal perfect for busy weeknights.

The great thing about it too is that it’s easy clean up! It’s a hands-off cooking method which, gives you ample time to whip up some easy side dishes like Air Fryer Garlic Parmesan Potatoes or Air Fryer Parmesan Green Beans. It’s one of our favorite easy weeknight dinners. Even my husband can do it!
I use oven-cooked sausage in various ways. I use it in my Italian Sausage, Potatoes, Peppers and Onions recipe and in my Baked Italian Sausage and Potatoes recipe.

What kind of Italian sausage to buy?
You may be wondering what kind of sausage to buy at the grocery store. Iook for “Italian” pork sausage because it contains fennel seeds. Other types of pork sausage do not. In my area near Philadelphia, it can be sold in one long rope or in five-inch long links.
You can buy mild Italian sausage or sweet Italian sausage, which is the same thing but, it’s NOT actually sweet. It’s just not spicy in contrast to hot Italian sausage. Premio brand is a good brand.
How long to bake sausage at 350 degrees?
The cooking time at 350F degrees for two pounds of sausage is about 20 minutes. Flip them over midway through the cooking time so they can brown on both sides.
What is the best way to cook sausages in the oven?
Place the sausages on a baking sheet, glass pan (<<I use theese) or casserole dish and bake uncovered so the sausage browns. By the way, you can make Italian sausage links in your air fryer in fewer minutes than in a conventional oven. Bake them in your air fryer for about 10-12 minutes on each side at 375F.
Do you bake sausage covered or uncovered?
As I’ve mentioned above, bake the sausage without aluminum foil so the sausages brown. They will not only look more appealing but, they’ll have a slight crisp to the top.
Ingredient
*The full, printable recipe is at the bottom of this post in the recipe card.
2 lbs Sweet Italian Sausage with fennel seeds or hot Italian sausage with fennel seeds (good quality)
You may add a little olive oil for some extra flavor.
If you’ve got the rope sausage, cut it into links either 5 inches or so in length or smaller. If you’re putting them in sandwiches, you can cut them the perfect size to fit into your rolls so they’re nice and snuggled.
You can use a sheet pan or any size baking dish.
The cooking time will depend on the length of the sausage links. The longer the link, the longer it’ll take to cook.
The internal temperature of the sausage should reach 160F degrees.
You can turn this Italian sausage recipe into a sheet pan meal by adding some vegetables to it. Personal preferences determine which ingredients you’ll pick.
Additions
If adding any of these additional ingredients, add extra virgin olive oil too.
- add peeled, cubed potatoes or baby potatoes
- color bell peppers
- yellow onions
- homemade tomato sauce
- Italian seasoning
Add Sausage to Pasta
You can cut up the cooked sausage and it to cooked pasta- ziti, penne, rigatoni, etc. with homemade tomato sauce with or without ricotta cheese and make a delicious pasta bake. It’s fabulous in my Baked Ziti with Ricotta Cheese.
Put the raw sausages on a baking sheet or baking dish. There’s no need for parchment paper. You don’ even have to grease the baking sheet because the fat from the sausage will do that for you.
Store the leftover cooked sausages in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days for maximum flavor. Althought it can last in your refrigerator longer, it will lose it’s flavor as time passes.
Side Dishes that Go with Italian Sausage
- Air Fryer Garlic Parmesan Potatoes
- Sauteed Rapini with Garlic and Lemon
- Air Fryer Parmesan Green Beans
- Italian Long Sweet Peppers Fried in Olive Oil
- Homemade Air Fryer Cheesy Garlic Bread
Use leftovers for sausage sandwiches or cut it up to add to pasta. Serve it with nice crusty bread and a green salad for a quick, flavorful meal your whole family will love.
And, you will love the ease and simplicity of making this easy dinner.
