Easy Kielbasa, Sauerkraut and Pierogies Slow Cooker

This Easy Kielbasa Sauerkraut and Pierogies Slow Cooker recipe with a two hour cooking time is made with a few ingredients for a delicious and hearty dinner the whole family will love the easy way!

kielbasa sauerkraut and pierogies slow cooker

This kielbasa dinner is made with good kielbasa, potato and cheese pierogi and tangy sauerkraut. It’s a wholesome meal in one that is pure Polish comfort food! Although I’m the daughter of Italian immigrants, I also like Polish food, among other ethnic cuisines. Try my Slow Cooker Pork and Saurkraut which happens to be one of my trending recipes.

Be sure to not overcook this recipe because the pasta part of the pierogi could become mushy and rip apart. Also, when layering this dish, it’s best to put the kielbasa on the bottom of the slow cooker so the pierogi isn’t sitting directly in the chicken broth where it can become mushy. The steam from the chicken broth will cook the pierogi.

Depending upon what region you live, you can find all of the ingredients to make this kielbasa dinner at your grocery store. However, I’ve never been able to find good-quality kielbasa there but, you can find it at butchers, farmers markets and a Polish deli. It’s a great recipe to file away when you need a quick slow cooker recipe.

What kind of Kielbasa should I buy?

I love smoked kielbasa but, it will lose it’s smoky flavor in this recipe because the slow cooker will steam it. Therefore, I suggest using cooked, fresh kielbasa that hasn’t been smoked.

You may still used smoked kielbasa, if that’s what you have on hand. It will still taste wonderful but, as I’ve mentioned, it will lose its smoky flavor.

Also, I am lucky enough to live close enough to a Polish deli that sells kielbasa they get from New York. It’s fresh and high quality. I keep it in my freezer. Therefore for best tasting results, I suggest buying the best quality kielbasa you can find.

What kind of sauerkraut should I buy?

For this kielbasa dinner, you may use jarred, canned or bagged sauerkraut you find at the grocery store. The bagged sauerkraut is located in the meat department because it’s refrigerated. The jarred and canned sauerkraut is located in the canned goods aisle.

When I’m at the Polish deli I told you about above, I pick up a jar of sauerkraut that is directly from Poland.

What kind of pierogi should I buy?

Again, when I’m at the Polish deli, I pick up some fantastic pierogi that is made in-house! Sometimes, I’ll pick up pierogi at Costo if they have it in their refrigerated section which is cheaper and almost as good. Otherwise, you may be able to find pierogi in the freezer section of the grocery store.

    Everyone loved it

  5. Hi. I’d try it on low for 3- 3 1/2 hours. Definitely check it at 3 hours to make sure the pierogi don’t get mushy.

  6. How long to cook if use low setting?

  7. Hi Heidi. In the ingredients section of the recipe card, it states “frozen pierogi”. I’ve gone back into the post and added “frozen” in the body of the post and the instructions though so it’s clearer. As for the extra liquid, you can reduce the amount of broth next time. It’s needed to allow the kielbasa and pierogi to steam and cook, otherwise there wouldn’t be enough liquid in the sauerkraut alone to steam. Plus, not enough liquid in the slow cooker pot would dry out and burn the sides and bottom. Try using 3/4 cup of broth or even 1/2 cup but, I wouldn’t go less than that. I’m glad you liked the recipe.

  8. Hello Joanne,
I wanted to try your recipe because I love sauerkraut. Made it today for dinner. I wasn’t sure from the instructions if the pierogies should be used frozen. when put in the slow cooker. I did use it that way. It tasted delicious but there was a lot of liquid on the bottom of the slow cooker. I do not think it’s from too much chicken broth. Is it from the sauerkraut? Would love to hear your suggestions. Thanks!
