This Roasted Cherry Tomato Soup recipe is a flavorful soup made with fresh ingredients: fresh cherry tomatoes, roasted garlic, olive oil, broth and fresh basil. It’s a delicious, creamy roasted tomato soup without adding cream. It’s gluten-free and Vegan option.

I love making homemade tomato soup with my garden ripe tomatoes! A tasty, hot soup warms you up makes you feel good inside! Plus, it’s a great way to use up garden tomatoes during tomato season.
This soup is similar to my Creamy Cherry Tomato Soup except that recipe has cream, although it can be omitted if you want to make it non-dairy. As a matter of fact, you could roast a whole bunch of cherry tomatoes and use some to make the soup and some for the tomato sauce, which can be frozen for later use.
Making your own soup, you can control the sodium, quality of ingredients and omit the preservatives. It’s healthier than canned soup and taste much better too. You’re going to love this recipe! It’s the best tomato soup.
A good tomato soup can’t be understated. It’s comforting and delicious. Of course, it would be perfectly paired with your favorite grilled cheese sandwich but I have some other serving options below.

Cherry Tomato Soup Recipe
Roasted Cherry Tomato Soup tastes so FRESH! It’s very simple to make too. It starts with vine ripe cherry tomatoes. Garden tomatoes will be spectacular in this recipe but, you can buy them at the grocery store or farmers market too and still make a delicious soup.
Some years depending on the weather, I get summer tomatoes from my home vegetable garden as late as the middle of October living in Pennsylvania, which isn’t the warmest of states in the fall.
Ingredients

- cherry tomatoes
- extra virgin olive oil
- garlic cloves
- fresh basil
- chicken broth or vegetable broth
- salt and black pepper to taste
First, preheat oven to 425F.
Then, add the cherry tomatoes to a baking sheet. You’ll add the garlic cloves, salt and black pepper, and EVOO.
Then, roast them in the oven.
Then, put the roasted mixture with all of the juices plus the fresh basil into a large bowl and use an immersion blender (affiliate link) or stand up blender to puree it until creamy.
Next, stir in the chicken broth (or vegetable broth if you prefer) and put it in a large pot and warm it up on medium-high heat for few minutes. Add additional salt and black pepper if you think it needs it.
I like using my immersion blender because it’s easier clean up than using my stand up blender for recipes like this but, you can also use it to make something as common as mashed potatoes.
This soup is super simple and tastes so incredibly good! It’s a great way to use up garden cherry tomatoes.
Substitutions and additions
- If you don’t like tomato skin and/or seeds in the soup, use a strainer (affiliate link) to remove it before adding the cream, broth, basil, salt and pepper.
- Use grape tomatoes if cherry tomatoes aren’t available.
- Add a quartered, peeled onion or chopped onion to the baking pan before roasting.
What to Serve with Tomato Soup
Grilled cheese sandwiches are perfect with tomato soup but, so are chicken sandwiches. A BLT or green salad pairs well with it too.
Serve it with a drizzle of olive oil, croutons, or grated parmesan cheese.
Leftover Soup
Put leftover soup in an airtight container and refrigerate it for days or freeze it for months in freezer-safe containers.
This soup is perfect to make in September when the temperature is dropping and garden tomatoes (and basil too) are still producing the end of the crop. But, you can buy cherry tomatoes throughout the colder months and still make this tomato basil soup.

- 1 3/4 lbs cherry tomatoes
- 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
- 4 large garlic cloves
- 1/4 cup basil leaves (or 1 tsp dried basil)
- 1 cup chicken broth (or vegetable broth)
- 3/4 tsp salt (or to taste)
- black pepper to taste
Instructions
- First, preheat oven to 425F.
- Then, add tomatoes (1 1/2 lbs), garlic cloves (4 large) salt (3/4 tsp), black pepper to taste and olive oil (1/4 cup) to a baking dish. Toss to coat tomatoes.
- Next, bake in oven at 425F for 35 minutes.
- Then, add tomatoes with juices from the baking pan to a blender (or a large bowl if you're using a hand blender.) See note below. Blend on low until smooth about one minute. Make it as thick or thin as you'd like. If you want it thinner, add some more broth. NOTE: If you choose to strain the tomato skin, do it before you add the chicken broth and basil.
- Next, stir in chicken broth (1 cup) (or vegetable broth) and basil (1/4 cup) and warm the soup on medium-high heat covered for five minutes or so. Taste it and see if you think it needs more salt or pepper.
