YUM! The first taste of this apple crisp recipe will leave you saying “Mmm.” The tart of the Granny Smith apples and dried cranberries seasoned with cinnamon, the sweetness of the brown sugar, the crunchy sweet oats mixed with rich buttery deliciousness is a combination of all things good especially on a rainy fall afternoon. This is a recipe I wish I had doubled but, it is so rich that you don’t need a big serving although, you’ll be tempted to take more for sure.
It is so easy to make too. The only time consuming part of this recipe is peeling, coring, and slicing the apples. If you have an apple corer, peeler, and slicer tool, it should make prepping much faster and easier. I found in using such a tool that you must align the apple correctly or it may not perform properly. If you make numerous apple recipes, this tool can really save you a lot of time and requires little cleaning, especially if you don’t like peeling apples. Once the apples are prepped, I just added one teaspoon of cinnamon and one tablespoon of Ocean Spray Craisins (dried cranberries) to them and set it aside while I made the oat mixture, which is also easy. I combined the oats, brown sugar, flour, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and nutmeg and then cut the butter into those ingredients with a pastry cutter or a fork although, a pastry cutter makes it easier to do. Make sure the butter is well incorporated into the dry ingredients as shown below in the picture.
Then, I put the apple mixture into a baking dish sprayed first with cooking spray. I put the oat mixture on top and baked it in the oven on 350 F for one hour. The aroma of apples seasoned with cinnamon baking filled the house while tempting my husband. It was a perfect recipe to make this time of year. I made roast beef in the Crock Pot, oven roasted potatoes, and broccoli for dinner and served the apple crisp aside a scoop of vanilla ice cream for dessert. It was a rich, tasty end to a nice dinner. The hubby and kids were happy.
This recipe would be great for Thanksgiving. It can be made a day or two in advance and reheated. I highly suggest serving it with vanilla ice cream and a sprinkling of nutmeg on the ice cream.
