4th of July Desserts Puff Pastry

Hosting a 4th of July party wouldn’t be complete without patriotic dishes to commemorate the celebration of the holiday! This puff pastry dessert is easy, delicious, festive and has a pretty presentation. It’s perfect for Independence Day.

Hence, it will look great on your buffet table! Plus, it can sit on a buffet table without requiring refrigeration. It makes a cute pull-apart, finger dessert. Adorn it with your favorite berries.

I used a star shape cookie cutter to make the star part of the flag pattern. You probably already have one in some hard-to-reach cabinet in your kitchen. That’s where mine lives but, at least I know where it is.

What’s nice about making this dessert is that you can use any red berry-flavored jam or preserves you like such as strawberry, raspberry, or cherry.

Likewise, use any blueish berry-flavored jam or preserves you like, such as blueberry, blackberry, boysenberry or even grape if that’s what you have on hand.

Where to find store-bought puff pastry

Find frozen puff pastry in the freezer section of your grocery store. It will likely be near the frozen pie crust area.

Instructions Summary

First, thaw puff pastry according to package directions. Puff pastry thaws quickly in the microwave so don’t leave it in longer than package directions for thawing. The puff pastry should still be cold after it’s thawed.

Be sure to stir the preserves so they are spreadable rather than chunky.

Next, preheat oven to 400F. Spray a large baking sheet.

Then, on a flat surface and using a star cookie cutter, cut one star out of the top left hand corner of one of the puff pastry sheets. It should be about an inch or so from the sides-top and bottom. 4th of July desserts puff pastry

Next, on a large cookie sheet, spread a thin layer of the blueberry jam on the top left hand corner of the other puff pastry sheet. Be sure the preserves are an inch away from the sides as shown below.

Then, on the same puff pastry sheet as the blueberry jam, spread a thin layer of the strawberry jam as shown. It will become the bottom layer.4th of July desserts puff pastry

Next, put the puff pastry with the star cutout on top of the bottom layer as shown.4th of July desserts puff pastry

Then, carefully and neatly cut the flag stripes about 1 1/4 inches. 4th of July desserts puff pastry

Next, carefully twist them as shown. Be neat and wipe off the blueberry jam that gets on the pastry. You may need to wash your hands in between twisting. Getting some of the strawberry jam on the pastry is fine as you want it to be seen but, not look messy, if possible.

Next, brush the pastry with a beaten egg.4th of July desserts puff pastry

Next, bake it in the center of a preheated oven 20-25 minutes. Check it at 20 minutes. If any of the blueberry jam runs over onto the pastry, carefully wipe it off right after you remove it from the oven.

Last, when the flag puff pastry has cooled a bit, sprinkle powdered sugar on it using a mesh strainer. Put some extra sugar on the areas that may not look so pretty. Serve it warm. Optional- garnish with fresh berries.
