It’s already time to get ready back-to-school! As much as we love summer in our house, school is right around the corner and I like to be prepared. So, we just have to roll with it at Walmart! I made a “AIM FOR THE STARS!” themed DIY Chalkboard Wall Calendar for goal setting for our kids so we can practice our first-grader’s and Kindergartner’s reading and math skills before school starts.
It’s incredibly easy-to-make in about 30 minutes (or even fewer) and is very versatile because you can use it for any school subject in which your kids need extra help or even just to keep track of assignments and tests. Plus, it can be used for many other organization ideas. But, I’ll get to that soon.
I like to shop at Walmart for back-to-school early so, we can have our pick of school and craft supplies, which always has very good prices! One of our staple products is 3M Scotch®Super Hold Tape. We use it for many kids’ crafts and day-to-day living. It’s strong enough to hold The weight of this wall calendar on the wall without removing the paint!
Check out this link for even more useful ideas using Create with 3M Scotch for back-to-school goal ideas!
Plus, you’ll need tape for the upcoming holiday season anyway so, stock up now!
Use this DIY Chalkboard Wall Calendar for:
- school academics
- chore charts
- behavior charts
- homeschooling
- sports and music lessons for multiple children
- budgeting goals
- exercise goals
- appointments
- sports activities
- errands tracking
One of the many great things about making and using this DIY wall calendar that resembles a chalk board is that instead of using chalk, you use a white crayon that looks like white chalk on the black foam boards. Plus, it can be easily erased with an eraser. Additionally, if you make a mistake and scratch the black off of the foam board, you can fix that with a black crayon.
This DIY Chalkboard is so versatile and easy-to-make with these step-by-step instructions.
If that isn’t great enough, this DIY Chalkboard Wall Calendar for Goal Setting can be used for multiple children! Just use one color Post it per child. I used blue for my first-born son and pin for my second because he was supposed to be a girl. LOL!
Hence, I bought most of the supplies I needed to make this calendar from my local Walmart.
As soon as I walked in the store, I approached, 4 fully-stocked aisles of back-to-school supplies organized neatly. Then I found out there were several more large boxes in the aisles of back-to-school supplies near the clothes section where, I found exceptional clearance pricing on jeans for our two boys. You can never have too many jeans for rugged little boys!
School is almost back… Just roll with it!
3M Scotch® brand is the only brand I like to use for tape too. It’s the best quality tape! Scotch® Super Hold Tape is strong enough to hold the weight of this DIY Chalkboard Wall Calendar when taped to the wall!
DIY Chalkboard Wall Calendar for Goal Setting
Purpose:
The purpose of this DIY Wall Calendar is to set set goals for kids whereby, simple weekday assignments are written on Post-it Notes each day in order to achieve a set goal at the end of the week. Because assignments can be easily moved from day-to-day, erased, scrapped, edited, it makes it very simple to revise the goal. You can visually see the progress being made which, is gratifying for both you and your child!
How Does This Chalkboard Wall Calendar for Goal Setting Work?
Choose, and customize simple assignments to write on multicolored Post-it Notes, using one color for each child, and place them in the weekday columns for each day. If assignments are not done, the Post-it Notes (with assignments) move to the “unfinished column where they are completed on the next day or on the weekend labeled “unfinished work.” Write the assignments based on weekly goals and the write the weekly goal in the “Goal” column.
When your child reaches a goal, put a “Good Job!’ sticker on their goal Post-it Note and decide if you will reward them. Perhaps, write what the reward will be on the Post-it Note!

How to make a DIY Chalkboard Wall Calendar for Goal Setting
This tutorial will show you how easy it is to make a DIY Chalkboard-like wall calendar!
First gather all of your supplies on a big, cleaned kitchen or dining room table.
DIY Chalkboard Wall Calendar for Goal Setting
Measure and Draw Lines on Black Foam Board
Next, get the black foam board, your yard stick and ruler (may be easier in some spots to use the ruler rather than the yard stick) along with white and black crayon to make the rows and columns.
With the yard stick and white crayon, measure and draw a one-inch boarder around the whole black foam board.
Then, place your yardstick along the bottom of the longest (length) side and begin to mark each column with the white crayon. You will then do the height of the board too. See the instructions below for easiest and fastest way to do it.
With the yard stick and white crayon put white markings on the black foam board as follows at each “inch mark” at the yard stick.
Length of board (both top and bottom):
1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, 13, 15, 16, 18, 19, 21, 22, 25 1/2, 29
Height of board (both top and bottom):
1, 5, 8, 8 1/2, 11 1/2, 12, 15, 15 1/2, 19
Now, using the yard stick, connect the lines with the white crayon. If you make a mistake, simply erase it with an eraser. You’re board should now look similar to a spreadsheet with cells.
Next, write in M, T, W, Th, F, Sat, Sun for the days of the week along the top cells as pictured. Under Sat and Sun, write “unfinished work.”
In the next cell, write “Complete” and in the last cell, write “Goal” as shown below.
Note: I erased the lines within the columns because I liked the cleaner look and distinction of the columns.
Next, using whatever space themed boarder decor you choose cut and tape the boarder to the one inch boarder you’ve drawn. Foam stickers are the easiest and fastest way to decorate the boarder.
Then, tape the light-weight basket to the bottom right-side corner of the board putting one piece of tape on each side of the rectangular basket.
Make the Interchangeable Monthly Sleeve
Then, take your clear 8 1/2″ x 11″ sleeve an measure up from the bottom 2 1/4″. Cut it across width wise so you have a 2 inch high by 8 1/2″ wide sleeve.
Next, print out this Months of the Year FREE Printable. Cut out the month for which you’d like to start and place it in the sleeve. Tape the sleeve, on each side, to the middle top of the boarder.
Then, using the gold glitter glue, write over top of the the word “Goal.” Allow it to dry before hanging the calendar.
Mount the DIY Chalkboard Wall Calendar for Goal Setting
Pick a wall in which you’d like to hang your calendar. I suggest in a place you and your kids can easily see it that is near a common school work place.
Using Scotch Strong hold tape, begin to tape each of the four corners of the calendar to the wall. Use 3, 4-5 inch pieces in each corner, slightly overlapping each other to give good tape coverage to each corner. You’re going to cover the top two corners with rockets so, you won’t see the tape.
Don’t worry, the Scotch Strong Hold tape Tap will not damage your walls if you need to remove it. None of my paint came off!
Next, find and print out a rocket picture from online. I made my rockets about 8 inches in length which is good coverage of the corners for which it will cover. Cut out the rocket from your print out and place it on top of the red glittered foam piece.
Cut around the rocket to get the shape. Use the rocket flame pieces that drop to decorate the other color’s rocket. Repeat this step for the green glittered foam piece.
Next, remove the backing of the foam glitter rockets and place each one over top of each of the top corners of the wall calendar where they’re pointing to each other.
Then, write out your weekly goals on the Post-it Notes Electric Yellow for each child.
Next, write their daily assignments corresponding to each child one different color 2 x 2 Post-it Notes. For example one child will always be blue and the second child will always be pink, and so on.
