Well, you’ve heard of White Russians, Black Russians and maybe even Red Russians but, you probably have never heard of a Bloody Russian have you?
My friend suggested the idea as a Halloween cocktail. I just had to come up with how to make it “bloody” red.
This recipe version does not contain coffee liqueur as it would not be red/pink. Instead, it’s replaced with pomegranate liqueur.
I added Grenadine to make it more red and “bloody.” If you like Grenadine, you’ll like this drink.
It’s super simple to make with only 5 ingredients counting the ice! It’s just about as simple as my Bat Tears Rum and Coke Halloween Cocktail.

Bloody White Russian Cocktail Recipe
First, let’s go over what is in a traditional White Russian just in case you don’t already know.
What is in a White Russian drink?
In a nutshell, it’s a Kahlua (coffee liqueur) and Cream cocktail with vodka and ice to keep it chilled.
However, you can use whole milk instead of half and half if that’s what you have on hand or if you want it to taste less creamy.
What alcohol is in a White Russian?
Here are the alcoholic ingredients, then add half and half (half milk and half cream) and crushed ice.
- vodka
- coffee liqueur
Bloody Russian
As I mentioned above, my “bloody” version of this alcoholic drink substitutes pomegranate liqueur for the coffee liqueur. Plus, I add some Grenadine for coloring and affect.
What is Grenadine?
It’s French for Pomegranate. Therefore, you can already guess that it’s made with pomegranate and that would be correct. It’s a very sweet pomegranate syrup.
Does Grenadine add flavor?
Yes. Grenadine is often used in cocktails or mocktails to add color or flavor to a drink.
Is there alcohol in Grenadine?
Grenadine is considered non-alcoholic because of its low alcohol content. Check the bottle to find out. My bottle says its 5 proof. You may use Grenadine syrup which may not have 0% alcohol but, again check the label.
Substitutions
- Use whole milk instead of half and half.
- Use almond milk instead of half and half.
- Omit vodka if you wish.
- Use 1.5 oz of pomegranate syrup (or Grenadine) instead of pomegranate liqueur.
A Bloody Russian cocktail would be perfect not only for Halloween or Valentine’s Day but, also a murder mystery dinner. Served cold and with a bloody cocktail napkin for affect. Do you dare?
