What is Limoncello?
Limoncello is a lemon liqueur that likely originated from southern Italy, in the Campania region which is where my parents were born. This area is where there the lemons are plentiful and the climate is conducive to the sun ripening them perfectly.
With so many lemons at your disposal, making a delicious lemon liqueur was inevitable.
The Amalfi Coast is decorated with lemon trees. We took our boys to Positano for the first time in the summer of 2023 and to say the least, they were wowed!
My son who was ten years old at the time literally said that as soon as we drove around the landscape and saw the breathtaking views of the Amalfi Coast. My sons said it was better than Disney World and I would whole heartedly agree!
What is Limoncello Made of?
Limoncello is made of grain alcohol, sometimes vodka is used, lemon peels and sugar.
The colder limoncello is, the better it tastes. It’s not a liqueur to drink at room temperature. I store my Limoncello in the freezer to keep it as cold as possible.
In Italy, it’s served after the meal and sometimes, you will be given it as complimentary by the restaurant owner or server if they like you.
NOTE: Limoncello, as other liquors, will not freeze when stored in your freezer. I keep my vodka and Cointreau in there too.
