Basil and Balsamic Glazed Prosciutto Wrapped Melon
“Prosciutto e melone” is what the Italians call it and it’s an authentic Italian dish you’ll find in Italy. I’ve had it on my trips to visit my family in southern Italy. Italians make delicious, simple dishes with their incredible fresh ingredients. I’m partial to Italian recipes but, I was raised on it.
This appetizer is perfect for making with ripe summer melons. Like an antipasto platter, you don’t need to cook or turn on your oven in the hot summer to make it.
The flavors are tantalizing for the pallet. Plus, it’s so easy to put together in just ten minutes. This dish is best made immediately before serving.

Ingredients
- 3 cantaloupe melon slices
- 3 honey dew melon slices
- 3 basil leaves
- 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar glaze
This recipe is basically just wrapping prosciutto slices around cantaloupe and honey dew melon slices, making basil ribbons to add and drizzling the wrapped melon with balsamic vinegar glaze.
It’s so delicious!
Balsamic glaze is so good to have one hand. I use it for Bruschetta with Cream Cheese, Grilled Peaches with Prosciutto and Feta Cheese and to make traditional caprese.
How to choose good melons
When I’m shopping for melons in the produce department of the grocery store, I look for unbruised melons that are fresh and young looking. I push in on the area where the stem used to be and if it’s hard, it’s not ripe yet. If I intend to use the melon with the next two days, I’ll look for ones where the stem area is softer.
Ripe cantaloupe and honey dew melons will make all the difference when making this dish! It’s great when you can make a quick and easy dish that your guests or family will love.
What fruit goes well with prosciutto?
Cantaloupe is a fruit that traditionally served with prosciutto in Italy. It’s a classic combination of salty and sweet that’s an adored favorite. Because honey dew melon is similar in texture and taste, it pairs well with prosciutto too.
Make this delicious dish any time of year, especially when melons are in season. It’s a tasty snack too!
